Monitor has a board in it that reports what resolution(s) it supports. Samsung's had problems with those previously.
This data can be viewed in Linux by dumping raw hexadecimal, which you would then need to interpret. There may be programs to do this for you - check out that wikipedia link for mention of a few. If you get bad info from the Syncmaster it may be unfixable without a flash of the EDID info on the Samsung, which I have no idea on the possibility of. I have a T240HD, which had problems of bad EDID in the 1st generation, fortunately I got a 2nd gen. If you've got good EDID data, there's a problem with how your OS is interpreting the EDID, and that should be fixable with some tinkering. Might hit some blogs about how to override EDID.
